I'm an ex-scientist and award-winning author, and somehow managed to get a Kindle book on the number 1 bestseller spot on Amazon US. But only for a few hours, so it doesn't count. I sold nearly a million books (but I keep losing track) and my work has been picked up by traditional publishers in several countries.
